The difference between dried and preserved florals, pampas grass and more

Dried and preserved flowers invite us into a whole new landscape of design. Giving us the idea of a cosmopolitan and sustainable approach to home styling. A floral captured in time that forges a deep connection to minimal aesthetics and everlasting decor.

Although similar, both methods differ notably in process and production. A lot of us can wonder where these differences lie and which design choice is truly best.

The preservation method; a capsule of time.

Preserving botanicals is a more sophisticated process, in which one of the main elements involves each stem and flower being submerged in a glycerin solution at the peak of their bloom. This means that your pampas grass will retain its natural form, colour and textural depth. Glycerin is a bio-substance that replaces the water and so gives the flower a new-found life. Preventing florals and pampas grass from becoming too dry or brittle to touch. This graces us with a flexible flower and a soft, feathery decor that can be admired for years.

The drying method; evolving naturally.

Another way to preserve flowers is the drying method. An approach that involves hanging florals upside down in a controlled environment which is dry and well-ventilated. The preserved process helps to retain an original form which results in two contrasting looks that differ in colour, volume and texture. Once dried and the moisture is removed, the evolved flowers reveal dusted themes, faded hues and an artistic aesthetic. Although we lose some of their natural colour and form, the outcome is an enchanting product that voices a refined design.

The advantages of choosing dried and preserved methods create a high environmental value, resulting in a durable composition. Despite their differences, both accentuate a look of elegance which is cost effective and available all year round.

The choice in method is about recognising which works for you, and for each floral. We carefully chose the preservation method for our Pampas Grass and the dried method for our Australian Native Flowers. We did this  to ensure we are optimising each individual bloom, its natural form and its native environment.
