How to style a modern-minimal home

When it comes to embracing a minimalist home, we are exposed to the idea of a ‘less is more’ which is a mentality and way of living that is rooted in purpose. It is about being intentional with how you decorate, and seeking a tuneful cohesion of form and function.

“Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication”

Leonardo da vinci

In modern minimalism, a well-designed home will express a light, airy and open feel. Typically it entails a monochromatic palette with clean designs, natural accents and ‘considered’ decor. Giving items of value, more focus and a refined disposition.

It calls for more thought, and the idea of a curated design story that reveals a myriad of benefits and a life-changing home experience. We gathered our designers' top tips so that you too can live with less and create this haven for yourself.

  1. Declutter

First of all, declutter your space. Once engrained, this practice will unearth a home that breathes inspiration and empowers a clear mind. Opening space for creativity, motivation and deeper relaxation. Be sure to repurpose, recycle or give away any items you no longer need.

  1. Preserve ambience

When keeping it simple, be careful not to leave your home looking empty. There is a delicate balance between minimalism and uninhibited. Design with sophistication in mind and allow your furnishings to have depth and be there by choice. Warm up with natural materials, elegant accents and  handwoven textiles.

  1. Embrace white space

Negative space creates room to breathe, and inspires the feeling of tranquillity and openness. Not every inch of your home has to be filled, which in the end creates congestion. Allow this open, light style to speak for itself and furnish your focus areas with less but larger items that serve a multi-functional purpose.

  1. Think green

Style with intention and think of the earth, in favour of decor that is durable and sustainable. Reminding ourselves to choose quality over quantity and to not over-buy. This way, we will create a harmonious balance between planet and design. Bring in an organic feel with plants, dried or preserved florals and earthy colour tones.

  1. One storyline

Choose a neutral colour palette to create a cohesive flow throughout your home. Leaving room for splashes of colour that create richer focal points and deeper layering. We like to style our ruby red pampas in minimal, airy hallways or in tall, open living spaces.

  1. Truly unique

For your furnishings, choose one-of-a-kind decor that emanates character and a personal touch. With eye-catching pieces and materials that form a ‘collection’ and a unique visual appeal. Style with your favourite pieces of art, high-quality florals and statement decoratives.

  1. Keep it tidy

Foster a sophisticated look and a true appreciation for your space, by keeping it tidy and clean. Give everything a place within your home and maintain a minimal aesthetic. Concealed or built-in storage are great for smaller household items and for those pieces that don’t have a functional or decorative benefit.

Above all, don’t forget to enjoy the process of creating a modern-minimal home. It's about feeling connected to where you live and using it as an opportunity to explore your authentic values, tastes and visions.
